Beside the traditional music and dance in high color and drama, there is also wayang kulit, the mysterious shadow puppet. During the performing, you can usually hear the hypnotic rhythm of the gamelan, the traditional instrument from Bali, that echoes across the island, music for the soul and a link to a distant past.

2.      If you want to see the wayang kulit show, which is the famous Bali’s traditional shadow puppet drama, you can   watch the show which is usually performed after dark in a temple courtyard or village meeting place. For the Balinese people, puppets has the pride of place in religious festivals as well as weddings and cremations. This show is usually performed by a dalang, or puppet master, and the story is usuakky single-handed. The dalang will usually use different voices and a large number of characters from its own puppet collection that he owns.

3.     The puppet master is highly respected by the community and believed to be blessed with magic powers.

4.       Stories are sourced from Hindu epics mixed with current events, designed to entertain and inform, with a blend of good and evil characters. Puppets are made from buffalo skin, perforated like lace to enhance lighting effects. Wayang Kulit has been designated a masterpiece of human heritage by UNESCO.

5.      Gamelan orchestras provide the traditional accompaniment to puppet theatre, Balinese dance and all religious rituals. They include xylophones and metallophones, drums, bamboo flutes, gongs and strings, all tuned to play together in a specific orchestra. Instruments are kept in the village open hall to symbolise community ownership.

6.      Different types of gamelans are played across Indonesia. The Balinese version is characterised by fast tempo change and among its favourite styles includes the repetitive ‘monkey chant’ and the modern gong kebyar with male and female instruments. Except in the most sacred melodies, today’s players enjoy adding an innovative twist to traditional tunes.

Bali Mynahs

Bali Mynahs are a rare and beautiful bird found only on the Bali Island in Indonesia. There are as few as 60 wild Bali Mynahs that inhabit the Bali Barat National Park in its northwestern corner. There they live amongst the open woodland and openly gather in the morning hours.
In size, they are no bigger than a cardinal. However, their beauty is unique. They have exquisite white wings with black tips. Their tails also bear the black tip marking. They have a bright blue color displayed around their eyes. Their heads are toppled with a white lacy burst of feathers. They are a very vocal bird and often their chatter is accompanied with the bobbing of their heads. This is especially noticeable in their mating season.
Their main diet is that of plants and other animals significantly insects, worms, caterpillars, ants, and other invertebrates. During seasons where food is scarce they tend to travel in groups to help locate provisions.
The limited population of the Bali mynah is due to the threat of illegal pet trade. Up until 1990 there were at least 60 of the birds in existence but because of the barren nature of their habitat and their habitual grouping technique, the numbers have decreased below 10. Though they are protected by the government their capture remains a problem as they can be sold as pets for around a thousand dollars. Many of them are lost to death due to the poor conditions of shipping them illegally.
Zoos have actually developed breeding programs to help repopulate the bird and its hopeful their efforts will succeed. Luckily due to the involvement of these organizations, the numbers of illegal trade have been greatly reduced. These programs also initiate educational awareness towards these and other extinct animals. In Indonesia the Bali Mynah is the symbol of such educational programs.
There are ways you can take a stand against the extinction of animals. One way is by rejecting products which are made from animal materials such as clothing, wallets, belts, etc. Buy locally grown and produced products so you can be sure of their history. Finally, exotic pets are often sold in an immoral way. Question the heritage of the animal before making a decision to purchase. Common care goes along way in saving the lives of these and other exotic animals. No animal should be found in extinct measure to satisfy the entertaining luxuries of humankind.

Dining in Bali pose endless possibilities as Indonesia has one of the world's greatest cuisine. From a five-star restaurant to a roadside stall, you will be amazed by the choices offered. Tourist-oriented restaurants abound in tourist centers but Indonesian and Chinese food is predominant.
Influences from all corners of the globe make up Balinese comestibles. Curries, cucumber, eggplant, Indian mustard and cow peas came from India; the Chinese brought the wok and stir-frying, Chinese mustard, and vegetables such as brassica and Chinese cabbage; from Arabia came kebabs and mouthwatering goat stews, while the Europeans introduced avocados, peanuts, pineapples, guavas, papayas, tomatoes, squashes, pumpkins, cocoa, soybean and cauliflower.
Balinese cooking revolves around spices, often partnered by coconut milk, which adds a rich flavor and creamy texture to intriguing dishes of tropical vegetables, poultry, meat and fish. Sugar, fragrant roots and leaves are fondly used and the end result is food that is both subtle and sophisticated. Rice is the basis of any Indonesian meal. A main serving of rice is normally taken first, followed by a small portion of three to four dishes of vegetables or meat, known as lauk. These dishes of lauk are placed in the center of the table for all to share.
A side dish or sambal, made with red-hot chilies ground with dried shrimp paste and other seasonings such as lime juice should be taken with caution. It can be scorching for the inexperienced or chili intolerant person, so do not be too adventurous with your sampling. If indeed you are scorched, do not drink water immediately as it will only worsen the situation; instead settle for bananas, plain boiled rice, bread or cucumber. However, delicious side dishes like tempeh, a protein-charged savory cake made of fermented soybeans, and rempeyek, small crisp cookies made of peanuts, should not be missed
